I Meant to Do My Work Today

I Meant to Do My Work Today
by
Richard Le Gallienne

I meant to do my work today—
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand—
So what could I do but laugh and go?

This poet lived in Brentford briefly which is how I came across him

From Bach to Burroughs

My sister introduced me to Jonathan Livingston Seagull some thirty odd years ago. For all its faults and simplicities I found it powerfully moving and went to see it at the cinema more than once. It describes the search of a lonely seagull who believes there’s more to life...

An Editor’s Rant

As an editor, I aim to  deliver an immaculate service that runs so smoothly that nobody notices. I wrote the following before Christmas, highly tempted to post it in our last pre-Christmas newsletter but I thought better of it. So here it is instead: Thank you for reading this...

As with all upgrades, it’s taken too long, used up too much time, and doesn’t quite do what it is supposed to (yet). On the other hand, if I waited until it is perfect it would never happen. I’ve even got a proper post ready to add once the...

Getting Involved in Brentford

I was recently asked how to get involved in Brentford and couldn’t fit the answer in a tweet so thanks to @rhys1984 for asking! Brentford, my home where I landed very much by accident is a fascinating place. It’s on the inskirts of the outskirts of London (or is...

Getting Through the As

Every so often, I run out of space on my bookshelves and decide to get rid of a few. It’s an occupational hazard when you buy books faster than you can get rid of them and, sometimes, faster than you can read them. When this happens I usually decide...

Investing in Woo

I left the Halifax building society over two years ago, when they refused to admit that a problem with their online banking service was anything to do with them (“ask your Internet Service Provider for help”). They had also been taken over by HSBC and I’ve always tried to...
